The volcano has been mentioned before by me , but this is mainly for those who have the volcano and would like to get the most out of it.This is the basic over view of the working zones. To explain bead making zone and bead forming zone.

When you have the molten glass ready to do a bead , the coated mandrel is in the fire with the glass .

Now the moment of contact is softly done and slowly rotate the mandrel one complete rotation in the fire, then go under the fire with the bead and the glass rod remains in the fire. The glass will cool a bit and be firmer then the molten glass in the fire, so as you rotate the mandrel more glass is wound on the bead. When you see the hot glass has formed a bead to the size you wanted stop feeding the glass down and move up a few mm. The glass is pulled into a thin thread and the fire cut its. Only when you are no more in contact can the glass rod be removed from the volcano.     ( See video clip  )

The bead is then brought up to the bead forming zone. This zone is on top of the fire and at the back of the oven. In this place you have clean heat to form the bead , when balanced and round you can remove it from the oven and use the hand tools. All ways reheat the bead after tool contact.

Now you can reheat a new color and while you are busy making this new glass you can park the bead at the top of the oven. So you can if need be use both hands to make the new glass in the shape you want.

Then bring the bead from the parking to the forming zone and using the fire to heat and stick the new glass to the bead. Some times you need this space for working in as it is about 700°C and more as you come near the fire. By working in such a hot place you have so much more working time. To cool down fast just come out of the volcano and you see how quickly small glass objects lose heat. There is a large working space in the volcano because the fire line is not the only place where to heat the glass. With open torches the only place to work is in the fire near the head of the torch or further away.

A centimeter left or right you are in the room tem. and cooling down fast. In the volcano .Working to the side of the fire is very good for stringers as the heat is not so strong but still it is melting the thiner glass.

The oven base becomes hot during working and this provides a pre heating platform . When working with millefori , the small glass flowers are pre heated and arranged in a row to be picket up by slowly rolling a very hot bead over them. The hot bead makes the millefori stick to it . Return to the volcano parking and hold there for a few seconds ,(This will give time for the new glass to heat up and not brake from a thermal shock) Then slowly rotate the bead and go slowly down to wards the top of the fire.

As the millefori start to melt the flower seems to close , and become a smaller flow. At this point you need to come out of the volcano and press the bead with the lentil press to flatten out the flowers and they get squashed together and makes them bigger.

By the way with hot glass working you are always in motion smoothly and evenly no start stop actions.

The fire is always been recycled and the heating is going into the wall ,so the heat is been reflected back giving an all around heating. You learn where the different temp, zones are to aid you in your glass making. This is when you are in the zone and that is the only place to be. It comes with time and working for it. You will know when you are working well, nobody can tell otherwise.

  4. Thanks Winston. Replied to your email. How does one get different flame conditions in a volcano, oxidising and reducing flames?

    • You can look here http://www.designsinglass.de/volcano.htm . The volcano USA has a good burner that you can adjust at the volcano. There are some video clips working with the volcano. The arm on which the burner is mounted can move the burner closer to the port but never bring the burner into the port. 2cm from port hot fire.
